Matching & Applying Foundation
Finding the perfect foundation color can be a task. First you must know your skin type. If you've never worn foundation before, I recommend you visiting with a beauty consultant in your local department store who is able to match African-American skin tones. If you're unable to find a consultant, you can match it yourself. Whether it's you or the consultant trying to make a match, follow steps in our Foundation Fury section and you can't go wrong.

|
Shimmer Look on the face
Add loose or crushed bronzer or shimmer to your foundation or moisturizer. Apply evenly all over face to create a healthy shimmery glow.
|
Create a Sheer or Tinted Foundation
Mix one part foundation and one part moisturizer. Apply all over face. Set with a loose translucent (no color) powder to complete a natural look.
|
Retouching Makeup
Oil from skin can build up in the middle day. Before touching up:
Blot the oily areas with tissue.
Then apply pressed or blotting powder.
Blotting before retouching helps to keep your color looking fresh instead of dark and artificial.

Matching Foundation
1. Before trying on the foundation, make sure it is formulated for your skin type.
2. Test the foundation in a well lit area.
3. Test on the jaw line & nose area.
3. Check the color:
 Does it match exactly?
If the color gives the face an ashy, chalky, orange, pink, rose tint keep trying other colors.
Foundation should go on smooth and match your skin perfectly, with no ashy/chalky look, orange, pink or rose cast.
4. Look & feel the texture:
 Did it go on smooth?
If it leaves any streaks or feels too thick, too greasy or too dry, then try other formulas.
|
Applying Foundation
1. Dot foundation in nose, cheeks, forehead and chin.
(Apply concealer to the eye area or blemish area for cover up as needed).
If you are using a cream to powder or 2-in-1 power foundation, apply with sponge as needed for coverage.
2. Use your fingers or a cosmetic sponge to blend foundation evenly on skin.
(Apply more if extra coverage is needed)
3. Set your foundation with a loose no color translucent powder.
(Use no color translucent powder to prevent adding any more color to your foundation.)
|
Foundation Mistakes to avoid
Do not test foundation in a dim lighted area
Do not apply foundation on too thick. Start out light then apply more if coverage is needed.
If you have Dry skin DO NOT USE oil-free or cream to powder foundations,
If you have Oily skin DO NOT USE oil-base or cream to powder foundations.
If the foundation is to light or chalky do not purchase. You need to continue to look for a color that matches.
ALWAYS TEST THE FOUNDATION BEFORE YOU BUY IT.

Definition of Foundation Terminology
|
Cream to powder: Packaged in a compact form, once apply the cream formula dries quickly to light powdery finish. Great for combination skin.
Matte, semi-matte, satin: The most wearable foundation; has the blemish-disguising coverage of matte without the dry, powdery texture. Perfect for everyday use.
Dewy: Gives a sheer, shiny, almost wet-look finish. Provides no coverage. Not recommended for oily or blemished skins. Excellent for dry skin.
Light-reflecting/diffusing, luminous: Great for mature skin. Contains light-reflecting pigments to provide a youthful glow.
Matte: Great for oily complexions. It gives a shine-free look, but if too much is applied it can appear chalky.
Maximum coverage: Gives complete coverage; Great for a blemish prone complexion. Can use as a concealer to hide scars, blemishes and birthmarks.
Oil-free: Great for oily or combination skin. Water-based, gives light to medium coverage. Contains oil-absorbing ingredients, plus moisturizing agents good for combination skin.
Sheer: Gives minimum coverage, evens skin tones; won't hide flaws, blemishes or scars.
Shimmer, pearlescent: Shimmer gives skin a glow. Pearlescent is softer than shimmer. Excellent on darker skin tones.
Tinted moisturizer: Sheer coverage, evens skin tone. Great for someone who just wants light protection on the skin.
Two-in-one powder: Can be applied for light to medium coverage, or with a damp sponge for maximum coverage. Excellent for combination skin or to hide a few blemishes.
